How to remove black screens from a video
Black frames and fade-outs accumulate in any long recording - between takes, before intros, at chapter breaks, or from paused screen captures. Lossless Video Cutter can scan your entire video, find every black region, and invert the selection so you keep only the content, all without re-encoding.

What counts as a "black screen"
The Remove Black Screens tool detects continuous runs of frames where every pixel is at or near zero brightness. It catches:
- Solid black frames between scenes or takes
- Fade-to-black transitions where the majority of the frame is dark
- Dead air before or after the main content starts
- Paused screen capture segments where the recording was running but nothing was on screen
Unlike manual trimming, the tool replaces your entire timeline selection in one step - you don't set individual in/out points.
Step-by-step
- Open your video with ⌘O.
- Open the smart tools panel. In the toolbar click the scan icon, or use the menu Edit → Remove Black Screens.
- Adjust the brightness threshold if needed. The default detects near-black frames. If your video has very dark (but not fully black) transitions you want to cut, raise the threshold slightly. If legitimate dark scenes are being caught, lower it.
- Set a minimum duration. Short flashes of black between cuts are normal in some footage. Setting a minimum duration (e.g., 0.5 s) prevents those single-frame dips from being treated as black screens to remove.
- Click Remove Black Screens. The tool analyzes the whole file and replaces your current segment selection with "everything except black regions." The timeline updates immediately.
- Review the timeline. Scrub through to verify the cuts look right. Adjust any segment boundaries by dragging their edges on the timeline if needed.
- Export with ⌘E. The output is a single merged file with black regions removed and no quality loss on the video track.
Why this is different from manual trimming
Other tools that remove black screens work by scanning, giving you a list, and asking you to manually confirm each one. Lossless Video Cutter takes a different approach: it treats "everything except black" as your new selection in one action. Because the operation is lossless, you can always undo, adjust, and re-export without any cumulative quality loss.
Common use cases
- Cleaning up raw recordings from a video call that had black frames between meetings
- Removing fade-outs between segments of a conference or event recording
- Stripping blank intro and outro leader from broadcast footage
- Preparing archival footage where blank intervals separate individual items on a tape transfer
Combine with Remove Silence
For screen recordings, lectures, or talking-head videos, running Remove Black Screens and then Remove Silence back-to-back is a powerful two-step cleanup that strips both visual and audio dead space in a couple of clicks.
